Anniversary with lilies

Created: June 2014

This cake was really made for a get-together to celebrate Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and my grandparents-in-law’s 55th anniversary. That’s too much to write on a cake, so I chose to write happy anniversary ;) It’s a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. I just piped a simple border for the bottom and decorated the rest with gumpaste.

I had gotten two sets of JEM gumpaste flower cutters for my birthday, so I tried those for the first time. Before this, I had only made roses. I decided on 2 large yellow lilies and several orange arum lilies.

The yellow lilies actually gave me some trouble. I used a tutorial that used wire to shape the petals, and I couldn’t quite make them blend in on the back. I also had a couple of the petal tips break off because they were so fragile.

The arum lilies were much easier. Each one only requires one petal and a stamen made with gumpaste.

In addition to the JEM sets, I received a couple petal dust palettes which I used for all of the flowers. They were a hard powder which wasn’t as easy to apply. It took multiple applications to show, though it’s still really useful because of the range of colors they have.

I hope to continue trying a wider variety of flowers instead of falling back on roses all the time :) I still need a ton of practice though!
